Overview

La obra de Matsúo Basho (1644-1694), discípulo del monje zen Buccho, es una de las cumbres de la literatura japonesa de todos los tiempos. En 1957, el gran poeta y ensayista mexicano Octavio Paz emprendió junto a Eikichi Hayashiya la tarea de traducir Sendas de Oku, el famoso diario de viaje de Basho, que hasta entonces no se había traducido a ninguna lengua occidental. La obra fue de nuevo publicada en 1970 y 1981 por Seix Barral; en 1992, la editorial Shinto Tsushin de Tokio publicó la traducción definitiva del texto en una lujosa edición acompañada de las caligrafías (incluidas en esta edición) y las pinturas del pintor Yosa Buson (1716-1783).
